I also want to travel the world cheaply and have been able to do so. In my case I travel by offering my services to a country who will then hire me to come and teach/consult while paying my way. My wife and I have been able to travel 14 separate times--Australia to Zimbabwe, never once reaching into my wallet and never once giving up my day job. If you are a skilled professional and have a marketable skill you can do the same thing. Check out my travel blog: otherguysdime.wordpress.com to learn how.
