Nice post, John. I imagine there's some culture shock in leaving Japan. My first long term travel experience was in Japan teaching English. I still miss the sushi and noodles!

I have been in Japan for about 7 years now. When people ask me what I think about living here, my answer is always the same: It's a great place to live, but a terrible place to work.
The main problem, at least for me, is the utter inability to get any information. If someone has information you need, it simply doesn't occur to them to offer it. It really is like extracting blood from a stone.
Anyway, despite that, I have plans to remain here indefinitely, since there are so many things I do love, and like you say, it is a very safe country for my 2 kids to grow up in.

Interesting to know the benefits of starting a business (or moving one) to Japan. I would have thought it to be much more difficult to break into the market there.

Great article and great story. Mine is somewhat similar (though I haven't been in Japan as long and didn't teach English). Have a great trip!

@Brian - The job is half teaching English, half hospitality, stay tuned to my blog in the last quarter of this year to see what it's all about :-)

@John - Japan appeals to me, but I'll be there on a working holiday visa so can't stay longer than a year, although with a regular job could see myself wanting too, so many things appeal there.

@NomadicMatt I am here for about 8 more weeks. Let me know if you are in Japan in that time.

@AdventureRob Once you start working here, you may never leave. The lifestyle gets too easy.

@Ryan No specific countries really. We are just going to try to cover as much of the world as possible. We have family in Hungary, Canada and Japan so we will try to visit those countries every year but other than that we are completely open.

Everybody seems to be in Bangkok these days so we will probably travel through there regularly even though we don't particularly like the city.

John,
Thank you for sharing your story. It's always great to hear stories from Japan as I'm interested in doing something similar within the next decade. I too recently bought a one way, but to Hawaii (only made it half way across the Pacific) and have found it a great, yet challenging experience. A life without challenges is truly boring.

What particular countries do you hope to travel to on your new journey?

@Nomadic Matt
Considering that you've been all over I'm really surprised you've only been in Japan for 1 day. You'll love it.
