What Can You Eat for $10 in Bangkok?

Why is Southeast Asia and Thailand in particular so popular? It is SOOOO cheap it is riduculous. Now cheap prices usually means poor taste and bad quality. Not the case in Thailand. Remember the cooking class I took while I was there? I still have the recipe book.

A Guide to the Caribbean on a Budget
From loyal reader Karen
The Caribbean is not the cheapest place in the world, but there are ways to get around. Especially when the cold whether hits, the Caribbean is an easy, quick escape.

And whatever you do, do NOT take LIAT Airlines to get around the Caribbean. They have a horrible on-time record and you’ll be in trouble if you’re using them to connect to another flight. Stay with seaplanes or the large airlines in the region.

Travel Video of the Week
Mobile Phone Keys
The wave of the future. Not check-in in the traditional way but using your cell phone to walk right in the lobby and straight to the room. Your cell phone unlocks your door. Europe and Asia always seem to get the cool tech first. Americans won’t see it until 5 years after everyone else has it.

What It’s Like Refusing a Full-Body Scan: A Firsthand Account

Depending on who you talk to, the pat downs you receive after refusing the full-body scanner is the equivalent of a sexual assault or a harmless necessity in the post 9/11 world. I think a lot has to do with the attitude you bring to the security line. If you understand the TSA is just doing their job, you might be OK. If you think the TSA is inept and that the physical search is a personal affront to you, the pat down suddenly becomes a bad experience. I’m not saying that the TSA is right all the time, but I do think everyone needs to realize it is an necessary evil at this point.

Nabbed! Man boards flight in ‘elderly’ disguise

Wow! How badly do you want to leave somewhere to use a Mission:Impossible type mask to get on a flight? But come on. His ID said he was 55. That mask makes him look like he’s 90.

Five value destinations for winter travel

I don’t know about Boston as a winter destination. It is cold in the Northeast, and the fact that you don’t have lines and crowds to deal with might be negated by the fact that you are frozen straight to the marrow of your bones. Costa Rica is always a great place to get away. Loved my time there.

Who’s REALLY flying your plane?

I think we all would like to believe that our pilots are sitting in the cockpit, ramrod straight, eyes straight ahead, hands firmly on the steering yoke, for the entire length of your flight. Sorry to burst your bubble but it really isn’t like that.

Marrakech shopping: secrets of the souks

I’m glad someone wrote the book I kept thinking about when I was in Marrakesh. Where is the guide to show me where all the souks are? There are so many, so many twists and turns in the alleys that is is easy to get lost in what you think is a small area. I’m not a big shopper, but I love walking through, seeing the vibrant colors of the fabrics, the smells of spices and incense, the give and take of bartering.

Which airline has the best frequent flier program?
There is an award for everything and frequent flier programs are not exception. If your favorite airline/hotel in listed here, sign up if you haven’t already.

13 Things Your Flight Attendant Won’t Tell You

Since the pilots got their chance to spill the beans, the flight attendants now can have their say. Not as informative as the pilots’, but maybe will give you some empathy for your FA the next time you board a plane.

How Safe is a Cruise??

Did you know that per capita there are more sexual assaults on cruise shops than there are in major American cities? Then you hear the stories of people disappearing off of ships, never be found again. Again, very small chance any of this could happen, but it is a possibilty you’ll want to protect yourself against.

The Biggest Travel Gouge and How to Avoid It

It’s food. Think about it. That $3.00 can of soda that should cost no more that $1.50. The bottles of water in the minibar that comes to $6-7 a piece. The restaurant that charges inflated prices because of the ‘tourist tax’. That’s why whenever I check into a hotel, I find the nearest drugstore/supermarket and stock up on snacks and water. When I eat out I find out where the locals eat. Never eat in a toursty area or in the shadow of a major landmark. Eat AWAY from Times Square, or the Eiffel Tower, etc.

Win Unlimited Flights on Qantas for One Year

Content. Enter. Win.

Muay Thai Boxing and Beer in a Bag at Bangkok’s Lumpini Stadium

This brought me back to my own Thailand experience in Bangkok and Ao Nang. My whole reason for going to Thailand was to see the fights up close and person.

Think Twice About Airport Shopping

First it’s expensive. Second, you have to pay more just to get it on the plane with you. It may be better to ship. Or ask youself, “Do I really need this?”

Tourist killed by lions while showering

Watch you back in bush! In the battle of man vs. beast, unless you have a rifle and lots of ammo, the beast is going to win.

Top Ten Travel Tips: Marrakech – Morocco

Another reminder about a fun experience in Marrakesh.

Hostels: When Is Your Time Up?

Every traveler thinks about this as they get older. When are you too old for hostels? You’re too old when the hostel has an age requirement that you surpass. Otherwise, why feel self conscious? You’re there to enjoy yourself like everyone else? And remember at hostels you can get a private room with an ensuite bathroom, if you want some privacy or just don’t want to be bothered with bunk mates. A little more expensive, but still much cheaper than any hotel room.

10 Difficult-to-Visit Places and How to Get There

I love this list because it shows that where there is a will there is a way. Just have to do a little research on the requirements.

The 20 Step Guide to Traveling With Your Pet

I don’t have a pet but I see the pet carriers in the airports and I always wonder about the dogs, cats and other critters in the luggage hold. Isn’t it cold down there? Is it really worth the hassle to take your pet on a trip?

Sometimes you just have to admit when you’re wrong.

Arthur Frommer, sir you were right and I was wrong.

Weeks back when the “usual” Thailand protests started, I, like many others, pooh poohed it as just what the Thai people do. They protest in the streets, sometimes the government gets overthrown, nobody gets hurt and Thailand goes on being the cheap, wonderful place for the traveler passing through.

When the trouble started, Frommer told everyone to completely skip the country. I thought that was an extreme reaction to something that at the time seemed like ‘typical’ Thailand.

But now I’ve got to say thing went from interesting to downright scary.

The New York Times had a story about an attempted assassination of a Thai general who supports the red shirt protesters.

In the middle of the street.

While he was talking to the NYTimes reporter!

Cars and buildings are burning. Foreign journalists have been killed covering the protests. The government has imposed a curfew in Bangkok. A good summary here.

I’m reading a lot of stories about the violence being isolated to just certain parts of Bangkok and that the rest of the city is fine, as well as the rest of the country.

Even if the rest of the country is quiet, can you really enjoy yourself when all the madness is going on around you? It’s like going to Haiti after the earthquake in a region not hit by the devastation. Can you REALLY enjoy yourself knowing there so much turmoil going on so close by?

Some can.

Many can’t.

If you planned on going to another part of Thailand and avoiding Bangkok altogether, that sounds like a great idea in theory. But the airport will always be a prime target for protesters, just like it was when I was next door in Cambodia. You could be stuck with a canceled flight…or stuck in the Bangkok airport.

When this latest round of protests started few months ago, many travelers, myself included, thought that this would blow over and be done with. It would be some cool pictures and some fascinating stories to entertain friends and family back home with. Not so fun when folks are dead in the streets.

Me, I’d jump right into Bangkok right now. But that is just me. Some would call me crazy, and I might agree with them.

Could I send other people there, especially inexperienced travelers who may not be savvy or street smart to avoid trouble. No. I’d be too worried about them. Not everyone is skilled enough to change their plans on the fly or might freak out if their hotel was suddenly closed.

Arthur Frommer, you were right and I was wrong. I wish was I was right though…Not to be right, but hoping that Thailand would be the warm, accommodating place it was for me and so many others.

For the latest, be sure to keep following friend and fellow travel blogger Jodi at Legal Nomads. She’s still in Bangkok and is keeping us all updated on her blog and Twitter feed @legalnomads.

Jodi from Legal Nomads continues to update the situation in Bangkok. She simply states, “Let me reiterate: I would not be sitting here posting on this crisis if my life were in danger.”

Visit Greece despite riots, experts say

Another country in turmoil is Greece. I blogged about my time there when there were explosions in the streets. Exciting up until you realize that those explosions sometimes come with riot police and thrown bottles. And I stand out in Greece. No need to put a target on your back.

I thought Japan had the lock on world’s strangest/funniest/scariest vending machines, but Nippon, you have some competition. Catch a LIVE lobster from a vending machine and cook it right away? Ridiculous and fascinating at the same time.

Confessions of a frequent-flier program skeptic

Travel advocate Christopher Elliott is clearly unimpressed by frequent flier miles programs all the airlines tout. Airlines give special access to lounges, better customer support and better chances for upgrades. All you’ve got to do is dedicate all your flight travel with one airline. Sometimes I wonder if I should have used an airline alliance so I could get the frequent flier miles from my round the world trip. But I’m not sure if I would have used them or if they would been valid after a certain amount of time.

Everyone has shots out the window of a plane. Take a gander and submit some of your own.

Lessons learned from your worst travel gaffes

I remember when I went from Honolulu to Tokyo. I got on the flight and examining the ticket… realized I was losing a day! I left in the early afternoon on the 16th from Hawaii and arrived at the next night on the 17th in Tokyo. The International Date Line got me.

How to Approach Strangers for Photos, Video or an Interview

One of the hardest things when you’re traveling solo is to get the right photos of yourself. How would anyone ever know you’ve actually been someplace if you’re never in the photo? Or how about getting some other people to talk to and take pictures of/with?

Flight attendant Heather Poole shows us what she packs for 10 days. I preach all the time, take just the carry-on. If you’ve got to check the bag and you’re not moving there full-time, you’re taking too much.

The big travel season is almost here, so get your passport renewed so you can hit the road. Americans, remember if you’re going to Canada, Bermuda, or the Caribbean you need a passport to travel to those locations by plane. By boat or by land, you can use a passport card.

Michael from The Mobile Lawyer nominated me to write about ’3 Avoidable Mistakes I Made’ on my round the world trip and what I learned from them.

What would I change about my round the world trip?

Honestly not much, but I did make a few mistakes that if I had the time machine to go back and fix, I would.

Mind you none of these are deal breakers and would jump on the plane to Hawaii all over again. Would avoiding these things have made my trip a little less stressful and save me some money? Absolutely.

Too many options can be a bad thing
I got used to booking tickets at the last minute in London. It was such a great jumping off point with trains from central London to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports that I reveled in the possibilities. Where should I go today? Athens? Paris? Amsterdam? Istanbul?

The bevy of options meant that I often booked last minute and didn’t always get the best deals. I paid more than I should have for flights. Hostels were inexpensive and abundant already so I never worried about finding a place to put my head at night. Planning that far in advance might have killed the spontaneity of the adventure but my wallet would have had a few more euros in it.

This is not just for planes. Eurostar was running a deal London to Paris for about $60US round trip when the usual price was significantly more than that. But you had to book at least 14 days in advance.

**Lesson 1: Get your tickets as far in advance as you possibly can. Or make a decision as quickly as possible and stick to it. It will work out!**

Thai tuk-tuk drivers and other scammers
There are all kinds of scams and semi-scams. By semi-scams I mean people are not outright robbing you, but they put you in situations where you normally would not spend money.

“I need to get a gas card. I take you to good shop, OK. You need suits?”

“You have girlfriend? Let me take you place with nice pretty stones.”

The Thai tuk-tuk drivers pulled that number so much that I created a video about it.

China has the young women who invite you into art galleries and pressure you into buying paintings or invite you to lunch and then leave you with a huge bill.

In Morocco, someone invited me to have tea…at his friend’s shop…which happened to sell jewelry and other baubles. Hmmmm…what do we think is going to happen here? The hard sell, that’s what.

In Barcelona and Rome, people engage you in conversation, act confused, feign a medical condition or play pretend football (soccer) with you to distract you. Meantime someone else is lifting your wallet or cutting open your pursue.

**Lesson 2: Research scams in the area you’re going to visit. Better yet, start talking to current visitors about what to avoid as soon as you arrive. The locals may not want to tell you, not to be malicious, but feeling it is impolite to talk badly about their countrymen and women.**

One Way Tickets are a No No
Flying from Bangkok to Hong Kong, I changed my scheduled a number of times. Since I didn’t know when I was going to leave Hong Kong, I didn’t bother print out a new itinerary.

When I got to my Thai Air flight check-in at the airport in Bangkok, I got the 4th degree in questioning…

Where are you going?

How long will you be in Hong Kong? – I’m in Bangkok still!

This went on for a good 20 minutes, with me explaining I didn’t have an itinerary and them wanting one showing I was going to leave Thailand at some point.

Then I learned you better have a departure ticket from anywhere you go in the world. I’m sure some countries are more lenient than others but Thai Air was not going to let me get on the flight to Hong Kong.

Illegal immigration is probably the prime reason. Too many people come with a one way ticket, overstay their visa and then they disappear into the populace. Bangkok is the air traffic hub for Southeast Asia, so many countries probably draw their line in the stand there before they land in their countries.

The Thai Air counter employees were extremely polite, but they were not going to let me on the flight. I had to run through the airport, use an expensive Internet cafe and then print the itinerary. Sucks yes, but it had to be done.

**Lesson 3: Have a departure ticket for any place you’re visiting and have the latest itinerary printed before you go to the airport/bus terminal/seaport/border crossing.**

I’ve been nominated by both Shannon @ A Little ADrift and Liz @ Travelogged to participate in the best travel tips from travel bloggers on the Internet started by Katie @ Tripbase.

So I wanted to give some ideas to my new readers and remind the loyal readers of some things I’ve been advocating for a long time in this forum.

Travel Secret #1 – Hostels
The world is in a recession. Folks are being laid off or worried about hanging on to what they have. Does that mean that you don’t travel for the next year? Two years? Five years? Whenever the global recession end?

What happens if it takes ten years? Can’t wait forever…

Which brings me to HOSTELS. Longtime loyal readers know this is how I traveled around the world. But consider hostels if you are taking a week long trip to Europe. Or to a big city in the United States.

Why are you paying $200 for a hotel room when the majority of your time in the room will be spent sleeping, showering or brushing your teeth?

Remember the last time you were in a hotel? What did you do there? Not much I’m betting.

My favorite hostel when I traveled: Lub d (means ‘sleep well’ in Thai) in Bangkok

Great modern look, fantastic location that is close to everything (but not so close that it keeps you up at night), bar on the ground floor, A/C in every room and a friendly staff

Go there and you won’t be disappointed. OK maybe you will be but it the odds are very low…

Lobby of Lub d, Bangkok, Thailand

Travel Secret #2 – Southeast Asia
Everyone wonders where to go if they are traveling for the first time. Or traveling by themselves. Most people consider Europe right away. Not sure why. Sorry my European friends. Super expensive. Maybe they think it is ‘easy’ and familiar because it’s Europe.

I say get on the next long haul flight and head to Southeast Asia . The region consists of Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, Laos, Singapore and more. Why go there? I’ll tell you!

- Cheap Prices

This is the biggest reason to head there. I talked extensively about my $7US HOTEL room in Cambodia (yes I contradicted myself from above, but $7 is $7). Prices even cheaper than $7 for rooms can be had.

Cheap food does not necessarily mean bad tasting food. Thailand has such great, tasty eats. Street food is amazing all through the region. But always look for LOCALS on line for street vendors and in crowded restaurants. These are the places you want to eat. There is a reason there is a line…and even more so if there is NO line.

Cooking lunch on a boat – Bangkok, Thailand

- Safety
Especially for solo female travelers, I think SE Asia may be one of the better places on Earth to get your feet wet. In fact from what I saw I would say females may have more to contend with from OTHER travelers than locals in Southeast Asia. Ladies please chime in here.

- Weather
Being near the equator means tropical weather year round. Of course this means you might have to contend with a typhoon/cyclone or hair frizzing, sweat inducing humidity. Some of you may like the cold weather. Give me hot temps anyday, especially if I to walk around.

The weather is also conducive to outdoor activities – SCUBA diving in the Philippines, playing with elephants in Thailand, motorcyles and motobikes all over (make sure your travel insurance is up to date).

Be forewarned however, the poverty you’ll see in Southeast Asia can be intense if you’ve never been in that type of environment. Cambodia struck me in particular. People tend to be apprehensive, but generally come out for the better after leaving and then being able to reflect on what they experienced. Don’t be afraid!

Travel Secret #3 – Penguin Beach (Boulder Beach)
A 45 minute drive outside of Cape Town, South Africa, it may be one of the few places where you can interact with wild animals on their own ground…without adult supervision and without worrying about being mauled or eaten. Isn’t that nice?

Watch out for the beaks though!

African penguins at home – Penguin Beach, South Africa

It’s the code of Penguin Beach: You don’t bother me, I don’t bother you. That means no attempted petting or picking them up. The colony of African penguins are lounging around and living life like you aren’t there.

The water on the beach is cold given the relative proximity to Antarctica. EX-tremely cold. I heard the stories, but when I dived into the water I shivered for a good 10 minutes, my teeth chattering so loud you could send an SOS message. Eventually your body adjusts and you enjoy the cold water, especially when the summer sun is bearing down on you.

About the only thing you have to avoid is the penguin waste on the beach. They are not cute and cuddly stuffed animals so they have to do their business somewhere. Just tiptoe around it and enjoy the sights.

One thing that can be creepy/fun: If you stand in a spot and don’t move, you could hear a pin drop. You see all these penguins around you and they are not making a single solitary sound. You feel like you’ve landed on an alien planet.

So there you have it. 3 travel secrets from me. Thanks again for Shannon and Liz for inviting me to join in the fun.

I talked about muay thai before and how it was the main reason I went to Thailand. For 2000 baht ($56US) you can get a front row seat at one of the many arenas that dot Thailand. You find mostly foreigners in the front row seats. The Thai generally sit in the bleachers that cost 800 baht ($23US)

You also get to meet the fighters afterward and take pictures.

There are usually 10-12 matches with (5) three minute rounds, with featherweight all the way up to heavyweight classes, just like you find in boxing.

What I did not know or expect, is that when the grown folks are done trying to knock each others blocks off, the youngsters come out and do it too!

Remember I said there were so many stories I didn’t have time to tell. Well, for those of you going through withdrawal, frantically hitting REFRESH in your web browser, these are some more tales from the road…

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Looking through the ruins of Angkor Wat, I met Australian Bradley and his girlfriend Catherine (Cat). Bradley and I hit it off and he shared with me a secret: He was going to propose to Cat in the ruins of Angkor Wat. This is him giving her the ring. He didn’t get down on one knee, which would have made the shot perfect, but I think Cat was so surprised she didn’t even notice. Somehow, I’m trying to get to Australia for that wedding…

That is a tree growing within the ruins of Angkor Wat behind Cat and Bradley. I’ll find some more shots of that.<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cDx_Xmj2fQ4/SaakFDJSKDI/AAAAAAAAA8w/ZMWOF-Ly6s4/s400/IMGP0072.JPG" alt=" Going Thru Withdrawal?
Notice anything about these two shots? Yes, there are YOUNG children riding on these bikes, with no helmets. In fact no one seems to wear a helmet in Southeast Asia. Most people can’t afford cars and gas is relatively expensive, so everyone rides a scooter or motorbike. And a whole family gets on the family motorbike. Dad in front then children, INCLUDING toddlers, wedged between Mom in the back. Crazy to me as a Westerner with all the motor vehicle laws we have. But when you’re used to doing something since you were born, it becomes second nature.

I talked about being an Instant Celebrity in Macau. But you see the woman in the picture below? I’m not sure who she thought I was, but when I had my arm around her to take pictures, she was SHAKING! I tried to pat her to calm her down and say it’s OK, but she probably didn’t understand me.

Or maybe she just felt the power! These two look like they can’t be any older than seven. Muy Thai is Thailand’s national sport and a source of pride for the entire country. This is no different than American kids getting involved in Pee Wee football or Little League at young ages. Except that these 7 year olds are trying to knock each others heads off!
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cDx_Xmj2fQ4/SaYcHXAzMQI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/lZgCgE1lpMg/s400/IMG_0551.JPG" alt=" Going Thru Withdrawal?
I don’t eat at McDonald’s much…since I care about my health! But when I was overseas I always stopped into McDonald’s to see what was on the menu. Just like McDonald’s in Hawaii had SPAM with rice, the menu conforms with the local appetites and customs of the local country.

McDonald’s in Bangkok had a shrimp patty on the menu. It wasn’t bad actually, but you could tell it was cooked in the same oil used to make the fries. Hey, why let all that grease go to waste?
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cDx_Xmj2fQ4/SaYcHZfDoTI/AAAAAAAAA8A/1OT6Xo3PUDI/s400/IMG_0479.JPG" alt=" Going Thru Withdrawal? I’m lovin’ it!
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cDx_Xmj2fQ4/SaYcHKMPZWI/AAAAAAAAA74/TR3j1WvQzA0/s400/IMG_0485.jpg" alt="IMG 0485 Going Thru Withdrawal?
By the time you read this I should enroute to Cape Town, South Africa. Asia has been absolutely amazing and I’m glad about everything I did here.

My flight takes off for Bangkok from Hong Kong at about 3PM local (2am ET) Sunday.

Hopefully there won’t be any political coups or revolutions while I’m at Bangkok Airport…

If all goes as planned I have a 7 hour flight to Doha, Qatar on Qatar Air.

Then I have a layover. OUCH! I have no idea what I’m going to do with myself. The plane lands in the middle of the night, so I’m wary of stepping out and not knowing where to go. Plus anything I would have wanted to see will probably be closed.

Then a 12 hour flight from Doha to Cape Town with a stop in Johannesburg. So I’m not exactly sure when my feet will touch the ground, but it will be awhile.

Ok, I’m just going to pass thru the airport in Vietnam to get to Hong Kong. But it’s a way out.

Bangkok is not going to open anytime soon. I realized that when I went back to the hotel yesterday afternoon, took a nap and turned on the TV. They were talking about opening the airport at 2PM. When I woke up at 3PM, the ticker across the TV screen said, “Bangkok Airport Tower Under Protester Control”

No, that airport is not opening anytime soon….

I’ll check in with everyone when I hit Hong Kong.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my US countrymen and women, whether you are at home or abroad.
