Fun and practical ways to eat in Europe. In Italy I used to get fresh bread and roasted chicken for a few euros from the supermarket. In Paris it was cheese, French bread and sliced meats. Fantastic. We paid a little extra (2.5 Euro) and took the lift up to the top of La Sagrada Familia, an active construction site. Worth it for the closer looks at the intricate work high up, but leave your vertigo, claustrophobia, nyctophobia, and any other irrational fears down below.

This Gaudi guy, he really made Barcelona a feast for the eyes and a very special place.

Barcelona is sprawling, in case you thought we were skipping around some little Spanish hamlet, with La Sagrada Familia at the center. That dark brown structure just right of center, that looks like a four poster bed.

When in Spain you drink a lot of sangria and eat tapas and paella. Ayana and I signed up for a cooking class where we learned how to make these two quintessential meals. For only 18 Euros, we learned to make it, and then ate as much as we wanted afterward.

We are joined by Kevin, Hannah and Susie, all three from the hostel we were staying at. We started off by making sangria. Wine, sugar, lemon, oranges, apples, and a brandy or rum and a carbonated drink like soda all make up the mixture.

Once we had the sangria to ‘fortify’ us, Carla, our instructor, began to make the paella. On this night: seafood paella.

Unlike Thailand where I made the food myself, Carla did most of the the cooking. But I did get a chance to put my touch on the dish by stirring the pan for 20 ‘fortified’ minutes while the rice cooked.

After dinner Ayana, Susie, Hannah and I sat in the bar and drank the rest of the sangria. They are two 18 year olds from Austrailia, just finished high school and are off on a gap year all around Europe. They will travel and work in Europe for their year and then head home. Great girls and great company!

The biggest attraction in Barcelona would have to be ‘La Sagrada Familia’, designed by Antoni Gaudi. This church began construction in the late 1800s and is not scheduled to be finished until 2020 or thereabout.

Why would a church take OVER 100 years to complete? You have to see it to believe it.

There will be 18 towers representing the 12 Apostles, the 4 Evangelists, The Virgin Mary and Christ Jesus. Intricate art and sculpture work adorn 3 facades, representing the Passion, the Glory and the Nativity.

The Spanish government, along with other interested parties, is financing the completion of the church. Workers maintain a busy schedule, and even with all the resources available, it will take at least another 10 years to finish.

We met Abraham and since Naomi gave him my information in advance, he knew exactly who were were and what we were doing.

We talked for a bit and Abraham gave us a complimentary bottle of Champagne on the house.

This was just the opening salad special!

Fantastic meals. I had the steak and Ayana had the house fish. Wish I had more pics of the dishes themselves but we were too busy eating them. Trust me when I say this food was great. When in Barcelona, check out Dostrece.

Ayana and I have made it to Barcelona, Spain after a fast but full 2 1/2 days in London.
