23 Reasons to Hit the Road Again

Do you really need any reason to travel? Perhaps. Let this list help you move your body to your next destination.

Common Pick-Pocket Schemes

I love the diagrams in this post and sometimes visualizing it helps make the concepts clearer. One of the commenters noted that in Guatemala someone used pepper spray to distract/blind the victim to steal. To me that is grounds for a beating by the victim if the perp(s) is ever caught. Water, soda, ketchup, mustard but pepper spray??? Taking it too far to steal my wallet!

Travel Video of the Week
Spanish Bullfighter Gored
WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES
I think that is the first time I’ve used that phrase on this blog. Don’t click through if you have a weak stomach.
Bullfighter Julio Aparicio was gored through the throat during this match in Madrid. This speaks to how different cultures react to the same event. Many Spaniards consider this another day in the life of a bullfighter. Other outside of Spain consider this karma for the torture the bull goes through as the spears are jabbed into his back during the bullfight.

Travel and the Thirty-Something Midlife Crisis

This post speaks to a lot of people who say: Is this all there is? School, work, apt/house, get married, work work some more until your retire (if you can retire), then die. Have these thoughts crossed your mind? This post is for you.

Crazy cruise: 7 absurdities of the seas

Some things you should consider before your next cruise. Whatever you do, don’t miss the cruise ship’s departure. If you’re in the US, you could held up by an old outdated law that prevents you from boarding the ship any place but the original intended departure point.

How to take your first road trip with a newborn baby

What happens when a happy traveler has a baby? Well nothing really. You should be able to still travel with your new bundle of joy. You have to plan a little more, but having a child does not mean your travels will/should be curtailed. In fact, it can spur you to different places you might not have considered.

TSA Response to “Pushy fliers may show up on TSA’s radar”

There was a story about the TSA creating a list of folks who causes trouble at airports. The initial report brought a rush of questions: Who’s on this list? Who gets to see the list? Will raising your voice or arguing with a TSA agent get you on the list? What are the consequences of being on the list?

The TSA saw all the rumors and tried to correct it in a post on their own blog. You don’t get put on the naughty list unless the police is called or you get arrested at the terminal. Either way, the key is: Behave yourself at the airport and on planes.

Royal Caribbean employee allegedly broke into homes of passengers

You can never tell who you are giving your information to. This travel agent, who actually worked for Royal Caribbean, knew exactly when you’d be out of town on a cruise, and would rob your home.

Top Six Reasons to Fly on Your Summer Vacation Travels

With all the news of fees, delays and lines, some good reasons why you should take off.

Airline Crash Update: Time for a Global Blacklist?

The number of airline fatalities has stopped falling and leveled off. In response many are calling for a global blacklist of airlines that have a higher accident/fatality rate. The European Union already has a blacklist but there is no globally recognized list so far. That might continue until there is a rash of crashes that make people rethink that.

For folks who are visiting the US or traveling through, national parks are a great diversion from the big cities. Simple, easy ideas on how to make your national park experience more enjoyable.

Love this article. Want to get to know a culture? HOW they eat is just as interesting as what they eat. We are different, but we are the same. Just remember to drink some extra soda in Egypt and leave something on the plate in China, amongst other things.

How to Make Cheap Mobile Calls, Even Overseas

From loyal reader Karen

Talks about Skype, TruPhone and Fring, options for making calls for pennies on the dollar. I used Skype while I traveled around the world, primarily through my laptop. These options would have you use it through your cell phone, which is even more convenient.

Joan Rivers on CNN
What does Joan Rivers have to do with travel?
The 31 Places to Go in 2010

Some great ideas on places to hit in 2010. Use this list to spur some ideas or open your eyes to new places. Included in this list are Sri Lanka, Antarctica (on my personal list), Seoul and Bahia, Brazil (one of the best trips I ever had).

China’s ugly face

One blogger’s story of being ripped off while in China. There is a delicate balance between opening yourself up to new experiences and people and being led astray. What can you do? Do a little research online. Even a simple Google search of “travel scams in X” may save you some time and aggravation.

Secret Islands of Southeast Asia

Want to get away from Phuket and all the usual places in SE Asia overrun with tourists who look and sound like you? Here an excellent list of up and coming locales that have charm and culture with the same affordable prices.

7 trips you should never book online

I agree with that round the world travel should not be done completely online. It would be great to talk with someone over your options, where you can stopover for free, etc. Large group trips I would also agree with, having led one two years ago to Costa Rica. You want human accountability when you have so many people and options involved.

Pickpocket strikes Air France Tokyo-Paris flight

You would think once you’re in the air the last thing you have to worry about is getting your valuables jacked. Sorry, these are tough times. Someone stole over $5000US worth of items from sleeping passengers on a long flight.

If I’m in charge once the theft was discovered, NOBODY is getting off that plane. Bags are searched, people are being frisked, the whole nine.

Emirates A380 first class luxury

For all you high rollers, the view of the Airbus A380 first class section. From inital glance it looks like a high end bar/lounge in a major city. I don’t think you’ll mind being stuck on a runway for hours if you had these amenities. I had never heard of a shower on board a commercial airliner before.

Sure beats a bag of peanuts and a can of soda, doesn’t it?

The Developing World’s 10 Best Ethical Destinations

If you want to have a clean conscience while you play on the beach or drink alcohol based drinks with umbrellas in them, you’ll want to look at this list. Make sure that your trip location of choice is environmentally conscience and a supporter of human rights.

10 Ways to Cut Your Travel Costs This Year

Great list and the article mentions Twitter as the first way to save. Twitter and Facebook are where all the good deals are.

For those you who don’t want to couchsurf, there is a pay option if you want a spare bedroom or futon all over the world.

Follow me on Twitter @brianepeters

The US State Department put this article together, but it goes for anyone traveling internationally.

Also has links about traveling to different regions of the world.

The best hostels in the world have…

Some of the best things I look for when I book a hostel. For me, the top 3 are free WiFi for Internet access, cleanliness and personal lockers.

Canada: Going to the Olympics? Make Sure You Have No DUIs on Your Record

I had no idea Canada would not let you in if you have DUIs on your record. That must be a shock to people arriving at the border or getting off the plane when they get turned away.

The difference: Canada consider Driving Under the Influence/While Intoxicated a felony, which means the same rules for murder, armed robbery and other serious crimes apply.

7 Steps to Planning (and Surviving) Multigenerational Travel

I encountered a few families on the road, including a husband, wife, toddler and grandma in my hostel in Hawaii. Traveling like that is not impossible and this article shows you how. Parents are worried about their kids and THEIR parents, most times needlessly.

Frommer’s Cover Photo Contest

Best things to do in 2010
From loyal reader Sabrina

If you need ideas on what to and where to go in 2010, here is a fine list from Lonely Planet. You can develop a nice round the world trip just from this list. Any RTW travel can have any theme, or no theme at all. Just get to where you want to be.

How to Get Out When a Snow Storm Strands You
From loyal reader TJ

With the weather getting nasty in the Northeast US of A, you might find yourself stuck at the airport with your flight delayed or cancelled and no solution in sight. What do you do? What DO you do?

Whatever the circumstance, it has to better than being in the plane and on the tarmac, not taking off, with LIMITED food and water, screaming babies and annoyed and frustrated adults.

10 places to escape Christmas

Going with my post from last week, some great places to spend Christmas Day. My Christmas Day last year in Ethiopia was one of the most memorable of my life. Christmas in Egypt must be really fascinating to observe.

I’d prefer to be in the Southern Hemisphere or somewhere near the equator in December. Which means you can hit church, and be down to your skivvies dipping into cool water on a beach in record time.

Australian travellers caught up in medical insurance scams

Travel insurance is so important, so important that people are trying to scam you out of it. When you buy it, please inform family and friends of your plans so they know what to do and who to ask if the worst case scenario happens.

Police shoot U.S. student’s laptop upon entry to Israel

The Israels thought that someone’s story about entering the country and where they had been previously were suspicious. So they took her to separate room, and proceeded to shoot the hell out of her laptop.

I still don’t understand this. If you thought that laptop was an explosive, do you want to shoot it? If you thought it held sensitive material, wouldn’t you want to confiscate it for further investigation?

All I know: The Israelis do not play games!

This Week’s Video: Poppin’ and Lockin’ from Japan
Just cool!

On the ground in Hong Kong

A nice listing of places to go, people to see and things to eat while in Hong Kong. I visited the Great Buddha on Lantau Island and spent much time in the hotspots of Lan Kwai Fong.

Hidden perils of airline code-sharing

Important for round the world travelers and anyone else who flies and switches airlines to get to your final destination, or multiple destinations.

So if you need to get from London to Mumbai, you may take Lufthansa to Istanbul and then switch to Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Mumbai. You buy one ticket and the alliance does the rest, setting you up on the proper partners within the alliance to get you to your final destination.

This talks about code sharing issues if the seating terminology is not the same on the the partner airlines and you end up in economy class when you should be in first class.

Air ambulances leave some with sky-high bills

You may not have believed me about air ambulance and medevac bills. You’ll see the stories here about bills over $20,000US and families being stuck in debt. Imagine the costs if you’re overseas away from your home country, American or any nationality. Your prices may be double because you have to cross an ocean.

The slow boat to China

Flying, getting patted down, crying babies, bad food, delays. Need more reasons not to fly? There are always alternatives, as this traveler did, taking a ferry boat from Japan to China over two days.

Saving For Travel

Have trouble saving up to hit the road? This site guides you through how much to save by choosing the country and how long you’ll be there. I am not quite sure where they get the costs from, but you can use it as a rough guesstimate.

This is one of those things where you say, “Wish I had thought of that.”

Forms 4 Travel

If you’re traveling with children, this site gives you forms you can use for the kids, including authorization for child travel with an organization, forms and documents for medical professionals, au pairs and babysitters.

Of course laws and regulations differ from country to country, so you should use these as a framework and modify as the locale dictates.
