Try a Private Jet, at Public Prices
Ever wanted to ride in style like a boss? You can within reason. With a combination of persistence, the Internet and some luck, you can get a private jet for prices closes to what to you pay in business class. If you’re really in luck you can get a ticket for coach prices.

More singles cabins slated for cruise line
Yeah for single cruises, who I’ve talked about before getting the short end of the stick. Single cruisers = money left on the table. The cruise lines are looking to collect all that money.

How New Generation of Young Global Jet-Setters Rack Up Frequent-Flier Miles
I had no concept of frequent flyer miles or even international travel when I was coming out of college. Those fortunate enough to get involved early get great benefits and a world view that serves them well in their business and personal lives.

How to Avoid Food Sickness While Traveling
This talks about food poisioning when you travel but that doesn’t mean it does not happen at home. I got e-coli poisisong at a hotel banquet in New Jersey. Laid me out for two days. Abroad I got sick my last time in Egypt. Running a fever and becoming the “King of the Bathroom Throne” is no fun at all. And even with all the precautions, you can never really completely avoid it. Being a vegetarian does not exclude you from trouble. In fact fruits and vegetables can be an easier way to transmit food borne disease.

Can complaining too much get you booted from a frequent flier program?
In a world – YES. Airlines can decide you are not worth the trouble if you complain all the time and they have to pay some type of compensation to you. They’d rather drop your business than dealing with you anymore.

How to travel the world without paying a penny
I bought the book reference in the article and will post a review about it. In the meantime, the idea seems completely valid.

8 Legit Ways to Travel for Free on Your RTW
Again, perfectly valid ways to travel for free or for very little money. Many times it requires thinking outside of the box, because you’ve probably never heard of other people using these ideas.

No Vacancy? No Problem! Find a Great Hotel Room When Everything Is Booked
Isn’t that the worst feeling? You can’t get the hotel room you want, there are no vacancies so you are forced to travel even more to get a hotel room. Or pay through the nose for a room. Or get a room in a substandard hotel. There are ways around it. The first thing is to call the hotel DIRECTLY as opposed to calling the national/international number for booking.

Beginner’s Guide to Gaining Points in Frequent Flyer Programs
If you keep hearing about frequent flyer miles but don’t know where to get started, this is a great primer on what to do to begin.

Back in September 2008, I was just let go from my job and instead of fretting in front of the TV watching the world economy collapse, or rushing from interview to interview trying to find work, I was planning my round the world trip.

I find the times strangely similar to 2008.

Layoffs. Consumer confidence is low. Governments trying to prop up their economies. More layoffs.

And in the middle of this I decided to travel around the world. What was I thinking?

Mainily I was thinking the world wasn’t going to end no matter the financial situation, and this might be my only chance to go and see the rest of the planet.

One of the biggest hurdles to the trip was figuring out my plane tickets. I heard about round the world tickets and started to do my research. I decided to look at the airline alliances (Skyteam, OneWorld, Star Alliance) or a ticket broker like Airtreks to book everything.

I found the airline alliances a little too restrictive. They wanted to me to go in one direction. all the time, east to west or west to east. No backtracking. They wanted to put a cap on my mileage and/or number of stops. Knowing that I decided to piece together my trip with Airtreks.

Hawaii, check. Then where too? Tokyo? Yup. Got to make a stop in Bangkok. You say it’s cheaper to stop in Doha on my way to South Africa? OK… and so on . That’s how I built my ticket. Today I might do things differently, especially since I’m better versed in the value of frequent flyer miles. I did about 30,000 miles in 4 months. I think that would be good for something in one the airline alliances.

The cost is what scares people off. Let me clarify. What they THINK the cost is scares them off.

They always think it is some astronomical number that requires a trust fund to pay for. Trust me when I say I am no trust fund baby. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Round the world tickets are CHEAP…well, relatively speaking of course. Check some of these real specials from the Airtreks website.

Can't afford this? Sure you can...

Cut back on your cable and buying lunch and you can getting across the planet

These prices are affordable if you make a living wage. It will require you to sacrifice but it can be done. And remember these are only two of the many examples. You can mix and match your destinations to your heart’s content. Remember too that the alliances have their own advantages. Whatever method you use, a round the world trip is always accessible and possible, even in an economic downturn.

Great ideas on what to do when things go wrong. Get bumped from that flight and the airline might offer you vouchers. You have an options. Ask for the money instead.

I like this list but I disagree about not staying anywhere except for Manhattan. The outer boroughs of New York City are a subway ride away and you can rent an apartment or house in Northern New Jersey with easy access to Manhattan with more room to stretch out.

Little hacks that could be consider unscrupulous when you’re on your flight. I still can’t figure out why someone would need/want to unlock a locked airplane bathroom but this information is here.

Frequent flier challenge: How to get the flights you want

Avoid the popular days and book as early as possible. Sounds like what you would normally do if you were flying with your own money and not frequent flyer miles.

Don’t let high gas prices stall your summer plans

One of the best things you can do for gas mileage is to get a tune up. If your car runs more efficiently, you can save gas. Also take advantage of smartphone apps that show the best prices for gas in your area. This is much better than driving around trying to find the cheapest gas. So you’re burning gas to find the cheapest gas. Counterintuitive, no?

This does not surprise me at all. Someone is going to set up tours to see the place that Osama died. Just waiting for the T-shirt hawkers outside the gates, waiting for the tourists to show up.

How to Fly Around Pesky Airline Fees

Pesky airline fees and how we can avoid them have been the topic of many articles lately and for good reason: Most passengers hate them. Airlines love them because they are adding to the bottom line and keep them in the black.

What a Government Shutdown Means for Travelers

Well thankfully this was averted but in case it did happen, these could have been the ramifications. Passport Day 2011 was cancelled preemptively and as of this writing there was no makeup date.

Which countries speak English as a second language the best?

You’d expect India to be the top of this list given its history with England, but nope it’s in the middle of the pack. The countries that did the best were Northern European – Finland, Sweden, The Netherlands. I know when I was in Amsterdam everyone I talked to spoke perfect English. Would this be important to someone who has a fear of the language barrier when they travel? Perhaps. But most everywhere in the world there are English speakers. Even in Japan, which did not perform well, public transportation and travel items are in Japanese and English. Nothing to fear abroad about language.

Cash? Free Flights? Your Guide to Being Bumped from a Flight (or Not)

Some people go out and actively seek getting bumped from flights so that they can collect cash from the airlines. I’m not sure I could deal with the aggravation of it, but like anything else, if there something to be had for free, someone is willing to go out and collect it. Here are some things to keep in mind if you want to a person to do this.

11 Reasons to Stop Dreaming and Start Planning Your Round the World Trip

Well I’ve always agreed with this and posted a video on Youtube about it – 7 Reasons You Should Travel Around the World. If you’re debating a round the world trip, debate no more. Just do it.

I Want to Move Abroad – Where Do I Start?

The person considering becoming an ex-pat has a lot of questyions that may ultimately stop them from making the leap. Here is a short article of things to consider and resources to help you make the decision to take off or not.

New credit card offers up the ante for globetrotters

With the world ecopnomy geting a little better the airlines are teaming up with credit card companies to offer credit that comes with airline miles. This can get you merchandise or more imporantly, free tickets to destinations near and far.

You left your phone on a plane, now what?

This happened to me. I had my cell phone in my carry-on on a flight to Florida and I lost my phone in between the seats. I don’t remember if I had to go back to the airport or if the phone was delivered, but I did get the phone back. When I discovered the phone missing, I called the airline and told them the flight I was on and my seat number. I’m sure that helped me recover the phone much faster.

More importantly check in, under and around your seat before you get off the plane. I had an iPod that I lost in the magazine holder in front of me somewhere in Southeast Asia because I was in such a rush to get off the plane.

Score 100,000 British Airways Miles for $95

$95 for free tickets is a fair trade off. Just don’t go buy stuff you normally wouldn’t just to get the points. You still have to pay that back.

7 ways to keep your stuff safe when you fly

I’ve posted before about flight attendants stealing from you in flight and this article addresses TSA agents, baggage handlers and other passengers stealing from you at the airport

How to Pack Your Suitcase as Efficiently as a Flight Attendant

Great info and video on how to pack to get more stuff into a SMALLER bag. That is the key. We are not trying to pack more into a bigger bag.

First Class for Less Than the Price of Economy

The vast majority of people who are sitting in first class are there because they were upgraded, either by the airline, frequent flier miles, etc. Only the very wealthy or the person who is going to splurge can afford those fares. So how can you do it? Read on.

How To Avoid Baggage Fees When Flying

Whether you are bring carry-ons or checked baggage, there are ways to save. But these days can you never completely get away from the fees. You can only hope to minimize them. These tips will help you get there.

Yes, You Can Afford to Go to Europe This Year

Takes a little planning and timing, but any destination is ‘affordable’.

Mobile Phones Should be Allowed on Airplanes

Umm I don’t know. Depending on who you talk to, phones on planes are perfectly fine and the current ban is an overreaction, or they will cause planes to fall from the skies. My concern is not even the safety of the plane, it’s the safety of the pasenger who keeps yapping the entire flight. On a bus or train you eventually get off or can possibly move to a different seat. You could be stuck on a plane for hours in the same seat listening to someone talk about what they are getting at the grocery store. Air rage is coming folks. Do we really want that?

9 Easy Ways to Boost Your Frequent Flyer Status

The frequent flyer question is one that constantly comes up, whether it is worth it or not to even sign up and jump through hoops to collect those points. If you do decide to do it, here are some ideas on how to maximize those points.

Travel Video of the Week
Uncle Sam Wants Your DNA: Privacy a price to pay for travel ticket?
9/11 has changes so many things. Is there is any doubt had terrorists NOT hijacked those planes that we would not be talking about this? The technology is allowing more and more of what was once science fiction move into the realm of possibility. But does this prevent terrorism/illegal immigration or merely inconvenience the 99.99% of travelers who don’t have bad intentions.

7 Ways to Offset Your Round-the-World Travel Expenses

That is always the big quetion isn’t it? If you don’t have much money to begin with, you don’t want to run out of cash while you’re in the middle of your grand adventure. There are ways to offset the cost of round the world travel. Just using your imagination and the skills you already have and you can travel indefinitely, as some people are doing right now.

The Last Day of AYCJ: Will There Be a 2011 Pass?

The JetBlue “All You Can Jet” pass SEEMS to be a success. We can never really tell because JetBlue won’t release the exact numbers of flyers who took them up on their offer to fly them wherever JetBlue goes for one set price for one month. Lots of excitement and buzz over the price and the unique opportunity provided by the deal. My question is: Why don’t more airlines do this? You’ll see packages like this to travel around Europe or Asia, but not in North America. If someone knows of a program for the USA/North America please let us know in the comments. If there is one that exists they sure are not doing a good job of letting people know about it.

So do you remember your first time? You were nervous. You didn’t know what to expect. I’m not talking about THAT first time, but your first flight. I can’t remember mine, but I’m pretty sure it was to the Caribbean. The one flight I do remember from my childhood was when we hit severe turbulenace and people were screaming and luggage was dropping from the overhead. Thankfully that didn’t scar me for life and prevent me from flying. Maybe that made me want to travel more. Maybe I thought it was a fun amusement ride. Ah, the innocence of babes…

GetSetApp
Referred by loyal reader Karen

You may actually assume that one method of transportation is automatically cheaper than the other. Even if you didn’t there was no easy way to compare prices…until now. GetSet is a US based product that still looks early in its development, but has the potential to really allow you to compare all of your options, and not just compare airline to airline. Does renting a car or taking Greyhound make more sense? Sometimes it does.

The site does not seem to fully support the bus option yet, but I’m sure that will come along at some point.

The biggest planning mistake: thinking that you can’t afford it. Once you get up and start looking and realize that most anyone can buy a round the world ticket, these other tips will help you maximize the time and money you do have.

Strategies to Stretch Your Dollar in South America

South America is not as INexpensive as you think. Large cities and large distances over rough terrain means that the continent is not as cheap as Southeast Asia. But as with everything else, if you do enough research there is a way around everything. This article compiles some of that information for you.

When large Fortune 500 corporations say they don’t like fees because they can’t accurately and manage travel costs, what does that mean for the average traveler on a limited budget who doesn’t have billions of dollars of revenue behind them?

Free Admission to Museums Nationwide

If you’re in the States, take advantage of what happens in London and the rest of the UK all the time: free access to museums. This will be only one day – September 25. For instance in New York City, the Intrepid, the Queens Botanical Garden, the Studio Museum in Harlem and South Street Seaport Museum as well as many others will be free for one day.

Round the world travel or long term travel is mostly seen as a solo/single person trip. But what if you’re a couple with kids? Is this out the realm for you? Certainly not and the Soultravelers are living proof of that. They are a married couple with a pre-teen daughter that has been on the road continuously for 5 years. Their tips on why you should do it may apply to you.

Learn to Shoot Photos in Low Light

We want the best shots in less than ideal conditions for taking photos. Here are some ideas on how to do that. Note that this does not mean that you must buy a super expenisve camera. Your camera that has served you well over the years is probably just fine. It may mean you need to use the many features you probably aren’t using now. Put your camera model number in a search engine and look for the operating manual. You’ll probably discover some things you may have never realized.

Top 10 Health and Beauty Tips for Travelers

One of the most interesting things: For my fair skinned friends, wear your UV protection not only at the beach at your tropical destination, but also on the airplane at 35,000 feet up. You’re getting a direct dose of sun and airplane windows don’t completely protect you from ultraviolet light. Wash your hands, drink water, try to get sleep and you’re halfway to staying upright and out of the way of hospitals when you travel.

I can personally vouch for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A full service sitdown lunch/dinner for 3 can be $10-15. You’re not getting steak and lobster but you are getting a full belly, which is more important than a fancy pants meal when you’re traveling. Use that money for something else.

Is it really worth stuffing snakes or birds down your pants? The potential payoff does not seem to be worth the potential jail time.

Difficult but certainly not impossible. Read on if you’re planning on not coming home or want to travel as long as you can.

Pop-Tarts Store Pops Up in NYC

Times Square used to be a den of seedy shops and women offering ‘a good time’. Now better known as the home of national chain restaurants, street vendors hawking wares (legally or illegally) and tickets for tours and Broadways show, it adds one more attraction. I would not even call this odd because this is New York after all.

Loyal reader Cherish sent me the following question:

Hey, I hope all is well with you!

I have a friend who was scheduled to travel to Thailand at the beginning of May. It’s his first time going to Asia and his buddy is pretty scared and wants to re-route the trip. Do you have any suggestions (other than the travel.state.gov) for where he can get realistic/up-to-date information on Americans travalling to bangkok… maybe a local blog site or something that I can send him? You’re the travel-guru, so I figured I’d ask!

Thanks,
Cherish

This is a real concern for people who are heading to Thailand or any other hotspot.

Mexico had travel plans cancelled when swine flu broke out and more recently after violence in border towns related to drug trafficking.

Kenya had riots in late 2007 over their presidential elections that caused many trips to be rerouted to Tanzania.

Paris has had youth riots with rock throwing and burning cars in 2005 and 2009.

The USA had the Rodney King verdict sparked LA riots back in 1992.

Thailand’s Red Shirts

Credit: Flickr/SpecialKRB

No country is immune from civil unrest. So what can you do if you have travel planned for a locale where the usual images of sunny beaches, great food and interesting artifacts is replaced with shouting protesters and burning cars and dead in the streets?

- Find blogs and Twitter accounts of people in the place where the problem is
Check out this blog post from Arthur Frommer where he warned people not to go to Thailand at all. Then in the comments, the consensus was Thailand was safe – from people who are on the ground in Thailand. As far as I know Frommer is not in Thailand and is basing his recommendation from news reports and his own feeling about the situation. I would trust information from people who are there.

So how do you find these people. How about simply putting

Thailand blog

or

ex-pat in Thailand blog

in your favorite search engine. Or entering those same phrases in the Twitter search engine. People are constantly tweeting about conditions in Thailand and elsewhere around the world AS IT HAPPENS. No delay waiting for your favorite news station to broadcast or website to get updated. Twitter has become an instant and seemingly credible news source for those who can access it.

One hint: If you read that ex-pats (people who have moved to another country for work or school) are leaving, you shouldn’t go. They have been there long enough to know the culture and when to get out. There is NO indication that ex-pats in Thailand are leaving en masse. None at all.

I was in Athens when there was rioting by farmers. I heard explosions when I was out food shopping, saw the protest and got out of the way. My time in Athens was not interrupted and I hardly noticed anything was going on.

Now if you saw a 60 second segment on TV, you might have avoided Athens thinking there was anarchy in the streets. Far from the case, which is why info from people who are actually there is so vital.

And I was next door in Cambodia when protesters closed Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok’s main airport and the hub for Southeast Asia. Again this looked really bad from afar, with thousands of tourists trapped at the airports. But the airports opened and everyone went home… eventually.

Everyone got home alright and the people who were in Thailand did not experience any problems beyond being severely inconvenienced. Some, like me, were out of money initially because I had to change my flight plans to get to Hong Kong, but that was all reimbursed.

Two people I know that are in Bangkok right now and who have info on their blogs and/or Twitter feeds are

Gary from Everything-Everywhere

Jodi from Legal Nomads

You can easily find others.

- Use your embassy resources
Checking in with your embassy before you get there is always a good idea. Cherish mentioned the US State Department, and each country has travel warnings for its citizens. The problem is that the travel warnings and advisories that come from government agencies tend to be a blanket statement not to go to a certain place without any specifics.

Also the agency might err on the side of caution (which is not a bad thing) and just steer you away from any potential conflict, even when not necessary.

- Go with Your Gut
Even after reading news reports, first person blogs and Twitter feeds and you’re still nervous about going, just don’t go.

You can’t enjoy yourself if you’re constantly worried that something is going to happen.

Hopefully you have travel insurance that will help reroute you to a different destination or reimburse if you absolutely have to cancel.

Remember part of the reason we travel is the see the rest of the world for what it really is, without the filter of media. Don’t let 10 second video snippets stop you from traveling in the first place. Try to get first person accounts of what’s happening on the ground. Shots of bloodied faces and rioters turning over cars tells a dramatic story that brings in big ratings, but may have nothing to do with your trip. And may be a very small part of what is really going on.

A post from fellow travel blogger @WorldLillie. I didn’t list this blog post because it mentions me, but I wanted to make the point clear from a different perspective that long term travel does not have to be expensive AND is not the domain of a certain type of person.

More often than not, what you do in this life does not depend on anyone else, but your own mindset and attitude about what you can and can’t do.

Travel Video of the Week
Travel Tip of the Week – Under no circumstances should you ever use use rooftop luggage

10 ways solo travelers can beat loneliness

People always asked me when I was traveling, “Weren’t you lonely, doing all these things by yourself?” The answer is no, and the reason was that I had so many things I wanted to see and do I had no time to think about who was or was not with me. I was focusing on my goals for the trips. Plus when you stay in hostels, unless you an introverted, so quiet you are scary Unabomber type, you’re going to make friends.

But if you’re still concerned about it, check out these hints.

Finding Cheap Round-the-World Airfares

Tips for helping you find RTW ticket deals. One thing the article mentioned is that 4 weeks or more is needed for around the world travel. So if the idea of spending 3 months on the road is completely unappealing to you, you can shorten it. Your trip is YOURS. You determine how long or short it should be and don’t have to justify it to anyone.

I think most people would say more is better in this case, but if you don’t have the time or inclination for it, a month long RTW trip will work.

Air Vaild

Thanks to Arthur Frommer for the link.

TripAdvisor meets the airline industry.

Instead of peer reviewing hotels, now you can find if an airline is blacklisted and should not be flown and which has the most comfortable seats in coach. All rated by travelers like you.

Ask the Pilot Talks about Turbulence

This article goes back to 2006 but the principles are all still the same regarding air turbulence and how passengers feel. Interesting note that when you’re having a bumpy time in the back, the pilots don’t feel anything.

For the least turbulence on the plane, try to get a seat over the wing. If you can deal with the engine noise, you might be able to ease your queasy stomach.

Enter to Win

I have mentioned this before but I wanted to repeat Chris from the Amateur Traveler regularly lists new contests that you can enter today to win great travel prizes. The Galapagos, Italy and round the world travel tickets are some of the travel items just looking for your entry form.

In talking to a friend recently I realized alot of what we consider to be overwhelming tasks like planning a round the world trip can be easily attained if simply broken down into SMALLER TASKS.

In a previous post I debunked the myth of a round the world trip costing the proverbial arm and leg. RTW tickets can be less than $2000US depending on stops.

The key to saving for around the world travel, or any type of travel, is to not do it yourself. It should be AUTOMATIC and done by some type of system.

So the question is – How do I save money on a consistent basis?

The answer is – Setup a savings account and DIRECT DEPOSIT $50 a week into it. Within a year you’ll have $2500.

If you get a paper check (or cash in your hands), call your bank and have them pull $50 a week out of your checking account and into your savings account.

Step up the numbers and you can have much more than that.

Before some of you boo hoo me, crying a river saying that you don’t have any money to save, the only people who have any type of excuse about not saving are the unemployed. If you are gainfully employed you can save $10 a day.

You’re not using 1000 minutes on your cell phone every month? Are you really watching 500 channels of cable? Do you need to buy lunch everyday?

You CAN do $10 a day. Trust me. $70 a week x 52 weeks = $3640 – the key: AUTOMATION

That is enough to buy a ticket around the world…or at least a round trip ticket to Australia, or South Africa or Paris, or whatever your dream destination is. Play your cards right with housing and food and you can keep traveling for a long time.

Don’t look at this ‘NEW’ money. Do not touch it. Do not do anything with it but let it accumulate in your savings account.

When you’re ready to use it, it will almost seem like you’ve hit the lottery. A nice stash of cash for you to use. I have used this over the years with great success. I even avoid looking at the amount on my monthly statement and when I finally look, it’s a shock how much has been saved up.

A very simple solution to what can seem like an overwhelming problem – How to Save for Travel

Automate your piggy bank – and you’ll soon have enough to see the rest of the world

On the Road: Traveling with Kids

This link from my good friends at @CareerBreakHQs leads to two great articles about traveling with children. I know there are readers who have children who think that long term travel is impossible and even a week with the fruit of your loins is a hassle bordering on terror. Not the case, according to the two families in the article. A good read for the solo travelers too.

Flight attendants union wants combat training

Has it really comes to this? I guess it has. Pilots carrying guns into the cockpit and flight attendants union wanting hand to hand combat training.

Finally an Idiot Proof Plane

Airline painted over a plane to point out where everthing is. I mean everything…I can’t explain it in words, just click for the pictures to see for yourself.

Travel Video of the Week
Bale Folclorico da Bahia
I was cleaning up and found a ticket from a performance I went to in Salvador, Brazil back in 2006. Salvador is the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, as it was the main point drop-off point for Africans during the slave trade in the ‘New World’, besides the Caribbean and the American South. One of the best tour trips I took and the performance by this dance troupe was one of the many highlights.

I don’t mean to scare anyone, because the same things can happen in your home country. But being aware of the local customs or laws goes a long way. For instance, don’t go to India asking for the nearest barbeque…

10 Guerilla Airline Travel Tips for the Geek-Minded Person

Not just for geeks trust me. The biggest thing you can learn from this and the comments is to get with one airline and stick with them if you can. You get priority if you can show if you are a frequent flier or have points from a credit card, miles you’ve saved up over the years or some other reward system. This helps if your flight is delayed and you need to get rescheduled. Even if you aren’t in a bad weather area, inclement conditions in other places domino and can affect flight schedules all over the world.

Paris: Shoe shopping survival guide for Paris

Traveling around a particular theme is always a good idea. You could travel around the USA just visiting the best barbecue spots. Or visit Japan with the intention of visiting Buddhist temples. Or travel to Central America and hike as many volcanoes as you can. For the shopaholics and fashionistas among you, this is a theme for you for the City of Light – Paris.

I wrote a blog post about getting robbed while in the air, and here is a compilation of other weird stories, primarliy from the skies. How about a guy caught trying to smuggle pygmy monkeys in HIS PANTS? Yes, you read that right.

This UK firm has a sampling of round the world tickets for you to preview. I like to highlight these whenever I get the chance to show the affordability of these types of trips. If you have the time, you can travel around the world. Money, in a relative sense, is not the biggest issue blocking you.

₤999 is about $1500US, which is the general starting point for round the world tickets. It all depends on where you want to go and what time of the year you decide to take off.
